Tabbed Browsing

What is tabbed browsing?

Multiple web pages contained in one window - use tabs to navigate from one website to the next.  An advantage of tabbed browsing is that it can hold many different web pages under one window instead of having lots of child windows.

To view an example of tabbed browsing on the APN Public PCs open Firefox.  Note that two web pages load, the standard People's Network homepage AND Te Ara Encyclopedia of New Zealand.  Te Ara is hidden behind the APN home page - click on the tab to view Te Ara page.

Internet Explorer v7 (installed on APN Public PCs) also supports tabbed browsing.

An example of using tabbed browsing:

  • Do a Google search
  • Right click the URL of a search result
  • Open in a new tab
  • Repeat this proceedure for the top three listed web sites on the Google results page
  • To view these web pages click on their tab listed or use the keyboard shortcut Control-Tab key

Hint

To open a new tab use the keyboard shortcut Control-T
