Downloading YouTube Videos

How can I download YouTube videos and save them to CD, DVD or memory stick on the APN Public PCs?

The following instructions are applicable to any website that has streaming media that you wish to take a copy of, so for example you could use these instructions to copy music from MySpace pages as well as video from YouTube.  Before making a copy of such files ensure you are legally allowed to.

- open Internet Explorer or FireFox

- go to the website you wish to download the video from eg http://youtube.com/watch?v=Muncs0lJDiw

- copy the website address (select the url in the address bar, right click, and copy)

- open another browser window or browser tab and go to http://www.file2hd.com/

- paste the YouTube website address in the URL: box

- tick the "I have read and agree ..." box

- select the Movie radio button (because you are trying to copy the video file, if you wanted to copy music select the music tab, etc)

- click the Get Files button

- now you should see files listed under the heading "Right click on the url to save the file"

- right click or just click on the file to download it - recommend downloading the high quality file if available

- download the file to My Documents

When the file has downloaded you can now use My Computer to copy and paste this file to CD, DVD, USB Flash drive or memory stick.

Note:  if you download the .flv file it may be called "get_video".  Rename the file something meaningful .flv

VLC media player (the orange traffic cone icon) will play .flv (Flash video) files.
